Met a Deaf Dog and a Voodoo Monkey Looked at the sound and said listen to the light A new religion clickbait and likes The robot messiah will listen to your lies [Chorus] Pray with the deaf dog and the voodoo monkey Electronic religion, fake news and lies The robot messiah will text you a miracle And the Deaf Dog is the origin of life Pray in the church of the Voodoo Monkey Worship the gods of tweets and likes The voodoo monkey is the divinity of lies And the Deaf Dog will bless all your crimes [Chorus] Pray with the deaf dog and the voodoo monkey Electronic religion, fake news and lies The robot messiah will text you a miracle And the Deaf Dog is the origin of life And thy Robot Messiah did post unto his chosen ones: “If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot, stomping on a human face. Forever. And by ignoring him you the people made it happen. Forgive them for they know what they do. Come to the church of the Voodoo Monkey Virtual reality is a trick of the light Our new religion will fuck with your mind The robot messiah is fake news in disguise Pray with the deaf dog and the voodoo monkey Electronic religion, fake news and lies The robot messiah will text you a miracle And sex crime is the origin of Christ

Jodie 02:55
Jodie took her dreams to the city Looking for a better life But the man looked on and laughed at her pride Jodie found a job in the city But really couldn’t pay the rent Went down on the man just to keep her dreams alive Why do we listen when the rich man tells us That the problem is the old and the poor? Why do we care about justice for the masses When the man’s above the law Jodie worked hard and looked pretty Smiled as she swallowed her pride But the man had a plan to sell on the streets at night She grew old in the city And nobody cried when she died She took her life when she realised the man lies Why do we listen when the rich man tells us That the problem is the old and the poor? Why do we care about justice for the masses When the man’s above the law Sun goes down in the city The mans gonna party tonight Souls are sold for a pocketful of lies ‘Cos lives are cheap in the city Bought and sold on the sly Can’t you see the devil wears a suit and tie Why do we listen when the rich man tells us That the problem is the old and the poor? Why do we care about justice for the masses When the man’s above the law

Fool 03:21
I was born at the wrong time, in the cold streets of a dark town I was raised by a lost soul, with a hard hand and a sharp tongue Wore worn clothes and old shoes, was a black sheep with nothing to lose Went to a bored school was an angry youth, learnt to be cruel Chorus Don’t Judge me now I’m not your fool Don’t judge my life I’ll break your rules x2 Don’t Judge me now x2 I walked in the sunshine, in the clean streets of a bright town I raised a new soul, with an open mind and a soft frown Wore new clothes and smart boots was a family man with strange roots Saw a new world wrote some new rules didn’t need you

Dissonant 03:03
A dissonant dream Strange little lies A walk in the dark You laughed And then you cried A feeling inside A twisted knife A stitch in time Never mind Run and hide You’re acting kinda weird now Totally strange You drive me crazy With the way you behave You’re playing games with me And I don’t know what you want me to be Pixie eyed dream girl Comes in the night She tells me stories I don’t understand She told the truth to me You and me ain’t got the same dreams You acting kinda crazy Really, really crazy now You’re driving me crazy You’re acting kinda weird now Totally strange You drive me crazy With the way you behave You’re playing games with me And I don’t know what you want me to be You’re acting kinda weird now Totally strange You drive me crazy With the way you behave You’re playing games with me And I don’t know what you want me to be

Anger 04:54
So give rise to your anger Life don’t give what you need The prince, the priest and the banker Brought you to your knees Lift your head and make a stand You and me side by side We should look out for each other Draw a line in the sand A child cries out for his mother As the priest has his way We can pray here together now Just let me play my game Give me back all my money Said the banker to my friend I don’t care if you’re hungry now You’re gotta pay back the man Lift your head and make a stand You and me side by side We should look out for each other Draw a line in the sand Girl cries out for her baby Landlord turns out the lights An old man sleeps in the gutter now Politician tells a lie A soldier dies in a foreign land Rich man sells another gun A nurse works a twelve-hour day A Prince shoots a lion for fun Lift your head and make a stand You and me side by side We should look out for each other Draw a line in the sand Don’t let them divide us now That is how they win You and me can bring them down We’ll fight them to the end Lift your head and make a stand You and me side by side We should look out for each other Draw a line in the sand Lift your head and make a stand You and me side by side We should look out for each other Draw a line in the sand

about

Created in 2019, the Deaf Dog and the Voodoo Monkey took the names of the characters of their first song - a prog-blues commentary on the internet world of fake news, clickbait and the religion of ‘likes’. The Deaf Dog found a simple, haunting musical theme and wrote the lyrics, then the Voodoo Monkey worked his magic with a dynamic, travelogue arrangement and added his powerfully efficient lead guitar.
The following songs took the same approach – a simple, bluesy theme and a foot stomping rhythm. Shape-shifting arrangements drove the songs forward while strange characters wove their personal stories through a hint of social commentary….
And so, a group was born and with it a strange musical universe….
DDVM took its British Rock heritage, from Pink Floyd and Cream of the 60’s all the way through to the 90’s with Oasis and Blur and created its own unique, modern sound that proudly retains the nostalgia of its influences. Simple, rock-blues elements are crafted to become a musical foundation which is then allowed to evolve and twist into a sonic journey through space and time.
This potent, deceptively simple, foot-tapping sound is mixed with ‘Alice in Wonderland’ storytelling, unsettling characters and an unnerving look at modern society.
This unique blend is illustrated by ‘Anger’ where a sullen guitar riff and simple percussion underlies an emotional blues lead as it weaves in and out of a disconcerting look at social inequality.
Or in ‘Jodie’ – where the tragedy of a ‘pixie eyed dream girl’ is propelled by hypnotic, powerful rhythms and frantic lead guitar underscoring a tale of social injustice.
